Our Engagement

Since Danny and I have talked about getting married for awhile, we knew the engagement would come soon. With his friend Pete marrying his true love Brooke last August and my cousin Maureen tieing the knot later in September, marriage was a topic we couldn't seem to escape.

Being the research wizard I am, searching for the perfect ring kept me busy for months. Six months to be exact! I just figured if I had to wear a ring everyday, that I sure as hell better love it. Plus, I don't really wear jewelry. I knew I wanted a blue stone rather than a diamond and one that wasn't the equivalent to a down payment on a house!

Then one day, I found it. The most beautiful ring in the world. My world. I had seen it on Etsy from a jeweler in California. It was beautiful, affordable and most of all, ME! Even though I saw a photo of it, I knew it wouldn't be the same as seeing it up close. I passed it along to Danny and left it all up to him.

Weeks passed by and of course I thought about when Danny would pop the question. But I kept cool as long as I could. When I heard the news that my cousin Diana had got engaged I started to get antsy. I was so happy for her! But you can imagine the fabulous news would only remind me of my special moment.

Our two and a half year anniversary was on the 11th of February and Danny gave me a vintage key. He said it would open something and I should wear it at all times. Boy, was I excited! That Saturday we celebrated at Candle 79 in the city for a yummy vegan dinner. I honestly thought it was going to happen. But it didn't.

Well, two days later it finally did. Valentine's Day, 2011 in the evening, Danny came home from work as usual. We ate dinner and cleaned up. He told me he had some gifts for me which made me upset because we agreed to skip gifts this year. We aren't big fans of the holiday. So he went to get the gifts and came out with a tray full of goodies.

I was presented with two bouquets of tulips, Sunkist Fruit Gems (my favorite) and a treasure chest. What would open that chest? The key! I ran to my bedroom to scoop it up and opened the lock. Inside was a small pile of Hershey Kisses and a poem. I read it out loud and turned around.

There he was on one knee, with the ring. I froze. How romantic was this! "Will you be my wife", he says. YES! I must say I was so surprised, even though I knew it was coming. And the ring, the ring! It was gorgeous. I finally had my special moment and I was one excited girl.
